WCY Board of Directors
Management of the Waldo County YMCA is vested in a volunteer Board of Directors. Board members (directors) owe a legal fiduciary duty to the Waldo County Y and shall act only in the Y’s best interest. Directors must respect the confidentiality of board deliberations and shall support decisions by the board.
The board actively recruits new board members and welcomes applicants with suitable skills and experience to help the Y grow services in the community. New board members are elected by a majority vote of the Board of Directors and hold office for three years. Directors may be reelected for up to two additional terms for a maximum of nine consecutive years. Board membership size is limited, so not all applicants may be elected. By-laws include provisions for resignation from office, leave of absence, or removal from office as appropriate. The Governance Committee is accepting applications for Board Membership for 2026-2027. Please submit your application by March 31, 2026 to be considered to join the Board in June 2026.
The Board of Directors meets monthly at 7 PM on the third Monday of the month, with exceptions for holidays. Meetings are either in person at the Waldo County Y or via ZOOM. In addition to attending regular board meetings, directors are appointed to serve on committees or task forces, based on their skills, experience, and interests. Acceptance as a board member includes joining membership of the Waldo County YMCA.
If you have additional questions about the Board of Directors, please leave your request for contact from the Chief Volunteer Officer (CVO) at the Waldo County YMCA front desk.
We are currently seeking a local Sophomore student to join our Board of Directors. If you wish to apply, please use the link below and return your application to Allison Harrell at aharrell@waldocountyymca.org or drop it off at the Y’s Front Desk.
Current Board Members

Frank Pavalkis
CVO
Board Member since 2022 Frank works for MaineHealth and is a devoted husband and father of three active boys. He believes that community plays just as big a role in raising children as family does, and that belief is what drew him to the Waldo County YMCA board — he wanted to be part of the conversation and connect with the people around him. The Y's children's programs have been a huge part of his boys' lives, and Frank is passionate about helping ensure this vital community resource continues to thrive for families like his.
Evan Hutchins
Vice CVO
Board Member since 2023 Evan owns and runs the daily operations of Hutchins and Son Masonry and Roofing, a small local construction company. A husband, father of two young kids, and man of faith, Evan grew up at the Y as a teenager and has never really left — he and his family are still regular members today. When the opportunity to serve on the board came along, he jumped at the chance to give back in whatever way he could. A big fan of the Masters Swim program, Evan knows firsthand how much the Y means to this community.
Meg Salmon-Carson
Past CVO
Board Member since 2020 Meg is a Speech and Language Pathologist working in local schools, and she and her husband have proudly called Belfast home for over 30 years. On the board, she has served as VCVO, CVO, and now PCVO, bringing years of dedicated leadership to the organization. An active participant in the Y's Masters Swim program, she also serves as a lead coordinator of the Waldo/Knox Counties Special Olympics Swim Meet — one of the Y's most beloved community events. Over the years, Meg has cheered on her three children through Bluefish, high school football and swim, Science Olympiad, and Ocean Science Bowl, and now loves watching them thrive in college and beyond. When she's not at the Y or the schools, you'll find her curling, hiking, or out walking her two dogs.

Adam Barnard
Board Member since 2023 Adam is a Physician Associate and Clinical Site Director for the Hospitalist department at MaineHealth Waldo Hospital. A Maine native, he returned after completing PA s
chool in 2011 and quickly fell in love with Belfast, where he lives with his wife and their border collie, Sam. They have a daughter, Sofia, who is a senior at UVM. An avid runner, Adam found that joining the board gave him the chance to connect more deeply with fellow Y members and to support an organization he sees as a vital part of the community's health and wellbeing.
Josh Birocco
Secretary
Board Member since 2022 Josh is an owner of Tucker Law Group in Bangor, Maine, where he has practiced as a litigation attorney for 26 years. When he's not working, you'll find him cheering on his two daughters at swim meets, ballet performances, and whatever else they're up to — or heading to the beach with his wife Tracy, their happy place, with their puppy sidekick Arlo in tow. The Y has been an integral part of the Birocco family, from Bluefish activities to childcare, and Josh joined the board to further the Y's mission and help ensure it continues to serve the many families of Waldo County for years.

Dan Bonin
Board Member since 2025 Dan is the owner of Bonin Masonry, Inc., where he oversees operations, leadership, and employee development. Outside of work, he's happiest spending time with his wife and six sons, and he loves training for long distance running and hiking. Dan's connection to the Y goes way back — from little league baseball clinics and pickup basketball games to logging hours in the weight room in high school. Those fond memories made joining the board an easy decision, and he's thrilled to be part of an organization that supports families throughout the community.
Kali McCarthy
Treasurer
Board Member since 2023 Kali is a CPA at MTA Accounting PA and currently serves as Treasurer of the Waldo County YMCA Board. An active athlete and youth soccer coach, she thrives on competitive sports and the outdoors — whether that's the beach, hiking, or traveling somewhere new. She has even competed in triathlons, and you can still find her coaching youth soccer today. The Y has been a central part of her daily life since moving back to the area in 2010 — it all started when her father gifted her that first annual membership, which she calls the best gift she ever received. Her family has had a membership ever since, and her kids grew up going through Y camps, childcare, and sports. Now, Kali is proud to give back by putting her financial expertise to work for an organization that has given her family so much.

Story Carlson
Student Board Member since 2025 Story is a senior at Belfast Area High School and one of the newest — and youngest — voices on the Waldo County YMCA Board. Outside of school, she stays active through sports and working out, and loves spending time with family, going on adventures, and traveling. Growing up around her parents' business gave Story a strong foundation in community and civic engagement, and she joined the board to build on that — getting more involved locally while gaining real board experience. She brings fresh energy and a genuine eagerness to learn, and is excited to grow alongside this incredible organization.

Sarah Crosby
Board Member since 2025 Sarah was a school principal and counselor in both midcoast Maine districts and other states. She is now with Maine Child Developmental Services working as a psychoeducational evaluator and special educator. She loves hiking, skiing, sailing, gardening, rowing gigs with Come Boating in Belfast, and helping out in her husband's furniture business. A longtime member of the Belfast and Searsmont communities, Sarah has seen firsthand the positive impact Y programs have on area youth and wants to strengthen and expand those programs for families — a commitment rooted in her deep ties to the community and her passion for supporting families.

Aaron Cross
Board Member since 2022 Aaron is a Game Warden Major and Deputy Chief of Law Enforcement with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. A husband and father of six, he stays busy in the outdoors and is actively involved in youth sports with his kids. Aaron grew up with the Waldo County Y — participating in sports, summer camps, and programs that helped shape who he is today — and he's honored to give back to an organization that meant so much to him. Most of all, he hopes to help ensure the Y continues to serve the people of this community for generations to come.

Aaron Fethke
Board Member since 2019 Aaron is an attorney at Fethke Law Offices and a proud father of three. When he's not working, you'll find him fishing, spending time at his camp, or enjoying the Maine outdoors. The Y has always held a special place in his family's life — his children were educated and cared for there, and that personal connection is what drew him to serve on the board.
Isabel Cross
Board Member since 2023 Isabel is a manager at Viking Lumber, where she loves pitching in wherever she's needed. Outside of work, she's devoted to her family, her dogs, and keeping up with her busy toddler. Growing up watching her parents volunteer and father serve on the Waldo YMCA Board, Isabel was inspired to get involved in her community too — and joining the board felt like a natural way to carry on that family tradition and give back to the Y.

A husband and proud father of two Belfast Area High School students, Rob is an active member of the Belfast Curling Club and involved in Scouting, and he's passionate about art and travel — catch him at his easel whenever he can carve out the time. His connection to the Y started with co-ed soccer leagues and grew through volunteer coaching as his kids became involved. Understanding how central the Y is to the health of the broader community, Rob is especially focused on supporting its long-term vision and sustainability.

A proud grandmother and dedicated volunteer, she's passionate about keeping the Waldo County YMCA thriving and evolving to meet the needs of the community. Some of her favorite Y programs say it all — from the Active Older Adults group and the Bluefish swim team, to the First Grade Swim Safety program and the annual Special Olympics swim meet. Denise believes in the Y's power to make a difference and is committed to helping guide it through the changes ahead.

Micaela
Schweitzer-BluhmBoard Member since 2025 A native of southern New England, Micaela, her husband Todd, and three children have called Maine home since 2017, and live in Belfast. When not avidly devouring news reporting, you might find her and her family sailing in Penobscot Bay, hitting the ski slopes across Maine, or hiking new paths with their two rescue dogs. The whole family loves the facilities, activities, and community of the Waldo County YMCA — including cheering on the Bluefish! Mica is thrilled to serve on the board and help support an organization that has become central to her family's life in Maine.

Roland Littlefield
Board Member since 2025 Roland is a real estate broker and co-owner of United Realty in Belfast, helping people buy and sell homes primarily throughout Waldo County. He also owns and manages a number of local rental and investment properties. Outside of work, Roland is a volunteer firefighter, helps coach youth sports, and loves spending time with his wife Jennifer and their three children. He joined the board because he loves what the Y brings to this community and wants to help keep that spirit alive.

Sarah Tomalty
Board Member since 2024 Sarah is a veterinarian and owner of Little River Veterinary Hospital, and she lives in Brooks with her husband, two teenage boys, and plenty of critters. She loves anything that gets her outside — hiking, camping, gardening, building stone walls, and walking dogs. The Bluefish swim and youth sports programs played an invaluable role in her kids' lives, and Sarah believes that the Y is a crucial hub for the whole community — especially for seniors and young families. She's enthusiastic about ensuring the Y continues to offer health and wellness opportunities for people of all ages.

Julie Morse
Board Member since 2014 Julie is a retired Deputy Chief U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Officer who now owns and manages a lakeside rental property. She loves lakeside living, gardening, sewing, and the company of her curious fur friends. Julie joined the board because she wanted to do more to support the Y's mission, and she takes her role as a strategic partner seriously — focusing her contributions on keeping the Y true to its mission and on solid footing for the future. She especially enjoys volunteering at Bluefish swim meets and the First Grade Swim Program.

Erin Varney
Board Member since 2025 Erin is a P.E. and Health Educator at Camden Hills Regional High School and a mom of two little boys who shares their love of the outdoors — especially skiing, kayaking, and biking. The Y holds a special place in Erin's heart as the place where she found her first friends after moving to Belfast, and after more than ten years as a member, that warm sense of community still keeps her coming back. Her family are big fans of Y Cycling, indoor soccer, and the Aquatics program, and she's excited to give back to a community that welcomed her so warmly.

Greg Dutch
Honorary Member
Belfast

Dan Horton
Board Member since the Y's founding Dan is a retired educator whose vision and dedication helped bring the Waldo County YMCA into existence. It all started in 1972, when he organized an intramural swim program for MSAD #34 — and when his young athletes, the Bluefish, wanted to compete, Dan found a way. Competing as guests of Bath and Camden YMCAs in 1974 and 1975, the Bluefish eventually gained recognition as the Belfast branch of the Maine State YMCA, laying the groundwork for what would become the Waldo County YMCA. Dan was instrumental in that founding process, co-authoring an early state grant to hire the organization's first executive officer and serving on the board since its very beginning — including three terms as Chief Volunteer Officer. Over the decades he has contributed to nearly every committee, both capital campaigns, and the launch of the Masters Swim program after the Savage pool opened. A longtime Maine
swim official, Dan's fingerprints are on nearly every corner of this organization, and his unwavering commitment to the Y's mission has shaped it into the community treasure it is today.

Vondrake Ross
Student Board Member since 2025 Vondrake is in his junior year at Mount View High School. He works at Hannaford and is a basketball player with a big heart and a natural desire to help people. He joined the Waldo County YMCA board because he saw it as a great opportunity to grow, gain experience, and make a difference in his community. What he loves most about the Y is the way it brings everyone together — making every person who walks through the door feel like family. Vondrake brings fresh energy and genuine enthusiasm to the board, and we're excited to have him at the table.

Heather Ward
Board Member since 2024 Heather is a family physician with MaineHealth and a mother of three now-grown children. In her free time, she loves running, knitting, reading, and traveling. The YMCA played a big role in her children's lives — especially through soccer and the Bluefish swim program — and she sees the Y as an essential part of community health. Heather is especially passionate about expanding the Y's offerings for active older adults.
