2013 Bluefish Swim Team

Swimming 101

Swim meets are long (sometimes very long!) but they are also lots of fun. Attending a swim meet is one of the best ways to make friends and get to know the people on the team. Information about Warm Up and Start Times are updated on our Website, team calendar, and the team bulletin board. It is important to only sign up for a swim meet if you are committed to attending. Please notify your coach ASAP if you have to cancel.

Q: Who runs the swim meets?
Besides the Coaches & the Lifeguards everyone at a swim meet is a Volunteer. That’s pretty incredible especially when you consider how many people it takes to run a swim meet. Our volunteers include our timers, officials, laptop & scoreboard operators, concession workers and deck helpers. The more you become involved in your child’s swimming, the more connected you will feel with your child(ren) as well as with the team. Ultimately, the team will benefit from your support and you will reap the benefits of being involved with your kids, their friends and getting to know the other families. The club is only as strong and successful as its parent support base.

Q: Do parents have to stay at swim meets or can they drop off their children and pick them up later?
It would be preferred that at least one parent or adult attend, especially if your child is 10 & under. Children of all ages look forward to their parents watching them compete, and would most likely be disappointed without their encouragement.

Swim meets are organized and run by parent & staff volunteers, and parents from all teams are expected to assist in some way at each swim meet. Even if you trust your child to behave, we still require your help to supervise.

Some of the stations that need to be manned include:

  • Lane Timers – We use stopwatches and a button as backup times for the touchpad’s in each swimmers race. In case a swimmer does not hit the touchpad or there is a technical problem; times from the button & stopwatches will be used as official times for the swim. *A minimum of 12 is needed for each meet.
  • Stroke and Turn Judges – Ensures swimmers swim strokes & turns are legal (*This job requires some training).
  • Deck Helpers - Assists coaches, keeps swimmers with the team, and helps find individuals before events.
  • Laptop/Colorado System - Like working with computers? We’re always looking for parents to learn how to use our Hytek Software and run the controls for the meet. No experience necessary, just a willingness to learn.
  • Concession Stand - The concession stand shifts are broken down into 30minute intervals. This is to ensure parents will be able to see their children compete in races.
  • Home Meet Clean-up Crew - After each meet we need help from parents to pick up the deck, balcony area, put away chairs, timing systems and meet equipment. Many hands make light work.
